Seven Floors Up"I saw a face in a black screen today. Second time now" she said. "Almost shapeless. So dull." A far off voice of someone and two arms around her waist and a warm breath in her hair. Past sunlight brilliant and heavy on her eyes. Bright enough to stay with her behind closed eyelids. A hazy speck of light in the dark. She imagined him being a light like that. Dear Jane.
I met a traveling musician the other day. Both of us being people of the road it's what we talked about. He said the road offers what seems like a limitless experience.
I told him I agreed. I thought of my father. Of the first time he got to know his hungry heart. Of the first time he saw my mother and how he always wanted to make her feel as graceful as she appeared to him. The musician said, the road may have its very own set of limitations but the payoff is potentially great for any soul

Anyone could see her pain the way she wore it. I imagined her ten or fifteen years from then still trying to rid herself of all the little cuts she'd collected during these years.
Trying to forgive herself for all the little compromises she'd made.
Forgiving herself with the help of the memories of when she didn't.
She would leave it where damage had already been done,
where she'd not been able to keep the knives away, and no one had saved her, and they'd gone ahead too far and too deep.
She would have named it a part of her instea
